2012 Audi R8 GT: Flying over the Alps at low altitude

Wörthersee, Austria – Over the last few years, the R8 has helped Audi carve out a prime spot for itself in the high-end sports car market. With its striking looks, V8 and V10 engines and all-wheel drive, the R8 is a member of a very select group of exotic cars – especially the R8 5.2, which is at the apex of the Audi pyramid, at least for the time being. With the new GT version, Audi’s quattro GmbH division is raising the bar a notch. This car is made for clients who like to take part in on-track test drives. That’s why the GT is both lighter and more powerful than the R8 5.2.
The R8 GT has a thinner windshield, the rear window and the bulkhead that separates the cockpit from the engine bay are made of polycarbonate, the rear hatch is made of carbon fibre as opposed to aluminum, and the fixed rear wing is made of carbon composite and is 1.2 kilograms lighter than the removable deflector on the conventional R8. But that’s not all. The exhaust system is both thinner and lighter, the engine’s underframe is made of magnesium and the designers even decided to use shorter cropped carpeting. The result is that the R8 GT weighs 1,525 kg – that’s 100 kg less than the R8 5.2.

Internal strife
A recalibration of the electronic engine control has helped increase the power to 560 hp, which is exactly the same as the Lamborghini Gallardo (although the Italian brand can still claim supremacy over the German with its Superleggera, which produces 10 more hp and is lighter to boot). As both Audi and Lamborghini belong to the Volkswagen Group, the marketing and public relations divisions of the respective brands take these subtle differences into account, but in real life, there is no clear advantage.

Right from ignition, the V10 comes to life with a rich and low sound that seems louder in the GT than in the R8 5.2. As soon as you get on the Autobahn and rev the engine to 5,000 rpm, the engine sound becomes a veritable scream until it reaches the 8,700 rpm limit. Meanwhile, the car is literally catapulted forward with significant – and addictive – force.

Quick, the S-tronic!
As for performance, this car is absolutely brilliant. There are doubts, however, about the single-clutch R-tronic gearbox, although it still changes gears faster than a conventional manual transmission. That said, it is neither as fast nor as smooth as the Audi’s dual-clutch S-tronic. Note that the brand’s engineers are currently developing a dual-clutch gearbox capable of dealing with the R8 engine’s power and torque, but it’s unlikely that it will be available on these cars for another year or two.

On the German and Austrian backroads between Munich and Wörthersee, the R8 GT proved to be more direct and more precise in quick turns and demonstrated less understeer than the R8 5.2. Indeed, the GT’s all-wheel drive sends only 15 percent of the torque to the front end in normal circumstances, which means that 85 percent of the toque is delivered to the rear wheels and that the GT handles a lot more like a rear-wheel drive than an AWD.  The internally-ventilated and drilled ceramic composite brake discs are extremely powerful and easy to adjust, which is not the case with certain rival brands.

Sporty luxury
The R8 GT’s passenger compartment sets itself apart from other R8s with the addition of white dials bearing red GT logos, carbon fibre and aluminum accents, and a superb Alcantara steering wheel with paddle shifters. Despite its more radical personality, the R8 GT is still equipped with air conditioning, a navigation system and a high-end audio system. In Europe, specialized equipment like a roll cage, racing seats with safety harness and fire extinguisher attached to floor on the passenger’s side can be ordered on option. This equipment will not be offered in Canada.

Exclusivity is guaranteed since Audi will only build 333 units of the R8 GT for the global market, and only 25 of these cars will be sold to Canadian buyers for a price of $228,000, some $55,000 more than the price of a R8 5.2. Sorry to disappoint you, but all those cars already have takers. However, you’ll be happy to learn that Audi just announced that it will market a Spyder version of the R8 GT that will be just as exclusive with production also limited to 333 units.

Original Furniture For Poker Fans

This furniture set is for those who like playing poker or just like the book or the film Alice in Wonderland. Kaira d’or has designed a beautiful table for living room. This creation is named as Alice in chairs and it perfectly matches the name as the interior gives the feel of a wonderland. White color is selected by the designer as the base color for table and chair. The furniture set comes with six chairs which are positioned well on the low table. The sides of the chairs are painted with a look of a playing card. The concept of card falling from the top of the wall and chairs nicely inside the table as been hidden, is main attraction of the pieces. The combination of white, red and black is always elegant. Let’s go to the Wonderland with this set of furniture!

Inspiring Home with One Garden per Level in Singapore

The Meera House was designed by Guz Architects and is located on the island of Sentosa in Singapore. We consider it a daring and original project- after all, not many homes feature green spaces for every floor of the building. Here is a short description from the architects: The plots on the island of Sentosa are not large and neighboring buildings are built close to the sides of each house. Thus our strategy was to build a solid wall to each side neighbor to provide privacy where possible,  while creating a central light and stair well which would funnel the sea breeze through the centre of the building.

How to Creatively Update your Bathroom on a Budget

If you are getting tired of your outdated bathroom and it’s time for an update, what are you waiting for? If its money you say, join the rest of home owners that struggle to make needed or wanted updates to their bathroom because of budget constraints. While being on a budget for you may mean only changing out the plumbing fixtures, while to someone else  it may mean only adding paint to the walls. Whichever is your scenario there are easy ways to update your bathroom, follow these tips.
  • Modernize with color: Depending on how much you can afford, adding modern colors to your bathroom can be the difference between a bathroom you enjoy to wake up to, and one that you rush out of in the morning! For a natural and Zen inspired bathroom use colors inspired by nature: browns, greens, blues, and beiges will instantly update your surroundings. Whether it’s through paint color, wall paper, finishes, or bath linens, modernize instantly with a pleasing color palette.
  • Do it yourself projects: If you are handy with do it yourself projects, a bathroom update may not be as expensive as you think. Consider installing beadboard paneling on your walls for a cottage interior feeling. Changing out plumbing fixtures to modern ones in your bathtub/shower and sink area is relatively simple, and can update the look of your entire sink or bathing area. If you have a favorite home improvement store, check to see if they have any do it yourself workshops. Many stores will feature a DIY project regularly, and many of them will arm you with the knowledge to update your bathroom.
Restore the classics: Assess the reason why you are updating your bathroom. If you are updating your bathroom because of old looking and malfunctioning amenities, then replacing with new is your best option. While, if you have a classic claw foot tub that is starting to discolor from age, there are many restoration techniques you can do to restore it. Between the internet, blogs, and design television programs, you are bound to find resources to help you update your classic bathroom to a functional and beautiful state. Remember, updating doesn’t have to always mean brand new, it may mean restoring the old to work beautifully.

Update your bathroom in phases: While we all would like to update an outdated bathroom within a weekend, the reality of your budget and time may not be realistic for this to happen. Consider saving money by remodeling or updating your bathroom in phases. For example, removing old ceramic tile, and replacing it on a bathroom wall may be a weekend project. A few weeks later consider repainting, and so on. Often times the reality of an expensive update seems more expensive if you want to accomplish at one time. Make a plan and focus on the long term goal to keep your finances in check.

Updating your bathroom is a closer reality than you thought, without having to spend 2 or 3 paychecks to do so. Analyze your bathroom and determine what needs to be updated, and what your wish list items are.  Tackle the needs first and plan out a timeline and a budget. You will be happier that you did, and so will your pocket. Seek inspiration and advice from those that have updated their bathrooms before to steer away from common mistakes and problems. In no time you will be enjoying your bathroom once again!
Freshoome readers we know you have updated your bathrooms – add on your best tips to save money!

Cool Living Room Arrangement

Shelving seemed to be a very generous line of work for the designers who were present with creations at Milan Furniture Fair. We’ve seen so many twisted and completely unexpected shelves that we hardly managed to make a selection. We initially photographed this cool shelving idea but then realized that the whole living room arrangement is worth sharing. So here it is, in all its creativity. A modern and yet warm atmosphere is generated by the simple and yet novel overall design. The beautiful white couch contrasts with the wooden surrounding furniture.  And check out the highly original table design with decorative wooden elements, some of them placed unexpectedly outside the table perimeter. Nicely done!

How to Make your Kitchen More Multifunctional

If you think your kitchen is only for cooking, think again. In most households the kitchen has become the center attraction of the home. Whether it is because cooking tends to bring people together, or because the kitchen area serves as a meeting, dining, task and multifunctional area on most days. Depending on your entertaining lifestyle the kitchen may be where you meet with friends over cooking Friday night appetizers or help your teenagers with homework. Here are tips for making your kitchen more multifunctional for you and all of the 100 others functions you’d like to do.

  • Preparation and serving: One of the best uses of a multifunctional kitchen is where food can be prepared, and well as served within the vicinity to maximize effort and space. Especially in small homes, and apartments, maximizing kitchen space is essential. Try and find kitchen counters that can double as task area for food preparation and plating dishes. For larger kitchens, an adjacent counter may be able to double as dining space with adjacent bar stools or chairs.
  • Versatile meets functional: With the onset and popularity of modular furniture and household components, kitchens are no exception. Work spaces housed on casters, or rollers, along with dining room tables that can double, as areas for home office work are great suggestions for the versatile household. Having a multifunctional kitchen also means sharing of space, and function. If you see a great looking work desk in a self-assembly catalog, use it for a dining room table or for a kitchen island. One piece of furniture, can serve many needs.
Combine education and leisure: Who says the kitchen has to be only about cooking? Why not incorporate open shelving for cookbooks, leisure and coffee table books for great place to be inspired as well as catch up on the latest recipes and fabulous interior kitchen ideas? Pair up your countertop with handy book shelving and display area below with chairs for enjoying conversation or taking in your favorite novel as you wait for dinner to cook. Combine your intellectual enjoyment with mindless entertainment, all in the comfort of your kitchen.
Let your finishes be multifunctional too: When you consider function, also think about multiple ways to make your interior finishes look and perform beautifully together. Add a personalized style into your kitchen with rustic touches like exposed overhead beams, wood floors, or weathered cabinetry. For a modern touch, sleek European cabinetry, stainless steel appliances and glossy lacquered look countertops can make a multifunctional kitchen have new meaning.
Your kitchen just got the needed boost you were looking for. By combining form, function, versatility, and leisure areas in your kitchen, cooking may become no longer a chore but a treasured experience. Look at your kitchen and invent ways to incorporate these tips into your home.  You never know how much time you spend in your kitchen until you lose track of time and hours are gone.  Why not enjoy the experience while you’re waiting for your meal? Life’s too short to wait around!

Unique Bedroom Design by Steve Kuhl Featuring a Pirate Ship

Designed by Steve Kuhl, this amazing pirate inspired bedroom accomplishes a dream for pirate enthusiasts of all ages. Ingeniously constructed, the unique bedroom can be accessed by letting go of all fears and becoming a child again: at a superior floor, a hole in the wall takes you sliding down a slide to a comfortable pillow located in the actual bedroom. Once you get up, the eyes immediately rise to meet a wonderful, fairy tale structure: a large pirate ship high on the ceiling. A wooden rope bridge is used to access the ship, where the crow’s nest reigns, alongside a second bed, for guests. The crow’s nest was made using a ten inch hand-hewn timber for extra strength and a rope connects it to the dressing below. The structure of the ship was carefully created: “We used 2×12 ribs to construct the hull of the ship, covering them with layers of 1/2 inch plywood to act as the planking. Our genius faux finisher developed a bomb-proof blend of plaster and epoxy with integrated colouring to simulate an old ship’s hull.” There is another way to access the bedroom: through a door that also hides the magic kingdom of the sea. A jail cell with a custom steel door meets whoever enters the room. It also serves as the base of the rope bridge. This astonishing interior design will help the child grow up in a creative environment, don’t you think?
